Scientific FAQ’s

Why do we need special products for the eye area?

Under the microscope the skin of the eye appears very thin. This creates less of a barrier and makes this area more sensitive to fragrance, preservatives and other chemicals. The skin around the eye is also one of the first areas to show signs of stress and aging that's why I created my TriComplex Eye Cream. I use three special ingredients: MDI Complex, Whitesphere Premium and Spherulite which will help lighten dark circles, reduce fine lines/wrinkles and increase skin firmness and elasticity. I believe these unique ingredients along with my special delivery system, creates the perfect eye cream.

How can I brighten up my dull complexion?

Dull complexion is caused by poor light reflectance. Brightening it up can be accomplished by using my Exfoliator and Skin Brightening serum. The White Bamboo Exfoliator polishes the surface using my distinctive scrubbing element "microsifted white bamboo", while the Skin Brightening Serum helps to correct pigment irregularities.

What can I do to get the redness out of my skin?

Procedures such as intense pulsed light or pulsed dye lasers are great at getting redness out of the skin when there are too many blood vessels. For less severe redness, the Skin Brightening Serum can also help.

I have oily skin. Do I still need a moisturizer?

This depends on the type of environment you are in. If you are in a warm, humid environment you probably don't need a moisturizer. If you are in a dry area, you will need to use a moisturizer despite your oily skin. Your skincare needs can change based on the environment. The Brightening Serums first ingredient is Seaweed Extract which promotes skin hydration and anti-inflammatory properties. It will moisturize your skin, help with acne hyperpigmentation and skin discolorations all in one! The second ingredient is Hyaluronic Acid which also plays a vital role in cell hydration by attracting and binding water into the skin.

Why is it important to use cleanser for the skin, rather than a bar of soap?

A bar of soap is ok when you are 12 but as we age our skin gets more sensitive and can be injured by exposure to harsh chemicals. A good skin cleanser will include ingredients that can thoroughly cleanse the skin without stripping it of its essential barrier oils. My pH Balancing Cleanser incorporates Glycerin which forms a natural barrier to keep skin moist and smooth. It also has Glycolic Acid to loosen dead skin cells. The 13 Botanical Extracts condition, nurture and heal the skin.

Why is Exfoliation such an important process in a skin care regimen?

For any good skin care regimen to work, the products have to get into the skin. Exfoliation removes the dead skin which can serve as a barrier. In addition, it provides a smooth even surface that reflects light more evenly and this creates skin which has a more youthful appearance. My White Bamboo Exfoliator has a clay base which when activated with water releases energy in the form of heat to purify pores and loosen dead skin cells. It also has four powerful antioxidants - Green Tea/ White Tea, Acai Fruit, and Ferulic Acid to protect, heal and restore the skin.

What are free radicals? What products can I use to protect my skin from these damaging elements?

Free radicals are reactive chemicals that can latch on to parts of the skin and collagen and destroy them. Products that have antioxidants can quench these and put out this small scale fire before it damages your skin. In my Daily Hydrating Moisturizer I have Retinol to help fight fine lines/wrinkles, as well as Ferulic Acid to protect against ultraviolet light. My Brightening Serum not only delivers a brighter complexion, but it also has Emblica Fruit to prevent oxidative stress and degradation of skin proteins.

What's the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin?

Dry skin is chronically dry- it always appears dry and scaly. Dehydrated skin is normal skin that is temporarily dry- it may result from excessive wind, exposure to dry environments or bad skin care products.

Why is sun protection so important when treating hyperpigmentation?

Sun exposure causes the skin cells to produce pigment to help shield it from further sun damage. Treating hyperpigmentation without protecting the skin from the sun is a waste because as you are helping to get rid of pigment you are also creating new pigment.

Is it okay to exfoliate sensitive skin?

Probably but you need to go slowly and use your common sense. Instead of exfoliating every other day, try it once a week and see how you do. Most people with sensitive skin can tolerate exfoliation once or twice a week.

What is the difference between the Scientific Skin Care Line and products purchased from department stores, drug stores and infomercials, etc?

I have spent a lot of time searching for ingredients that will be active for your skin and deliver results. Most mass market products are designed for an average person- mine is pretty targeted and each product is designed to accomplish one goal.

Can Scientific Skin be used during pregnancy? If so, what products are safe?

There is no data on the use of most products during pregnancy and I would ask your obstetrician what his or her preferences are. During pregnancy, I like my patients to use bland products and to avoid many active ingredients so it might be appropriate to take a break from products such as the Intensive Repair Serum.

What can I expect when using the Scientific Skin Care Line?

Expect to use the best skin care products that I know of. Expect that your skin should look and feel better within six weeks. Expect skin that is more radiant.

Do Scientific products contain fragrance?

No, they do not.

How do I know what sunblock is right for me?

If you are fair skinned with light eyes, you need an SPF 60 that has UVA block as well. If you are darker, you can tolerate lower SPF. Choosing the right base (cream, gel , stick or lotion) depends on how oily or dry your skin is. For skin that tends to be greasy, choose a gel. Skin that is dry needs a cream or lotion. When you are going to be sweating a lot, select something that is non irritating to the eyes so that it wont bother you if it drips into the eyes.
